What Was Updated on the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze?
Following a full revision for the 2016 model year, the Chevrolet Cruze has plenty of updates for 2017 that drivers will enjoy. These include the Cruze Hatchback, with the 2017 model being the first time this particular body style of the model is offered in the United States. The 2017 Cruze also marks the return of the available diesel engine, although it is limited to the sedan models. This diesel Cruze has an all-new powertrain that is a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and works with a 6-speed automatic.
The 2017 Cruze Hatchback has similar features to the sedan along with the same transmissions and 153-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The hatchback does vary in more than just body style, though. Its tuning is geared more towards fun while the sedan's is designed with comfort in mind; to help with this, Chevrolet gave the Cruze hatchback an independent rear suspension. The new Cruze Hatchback delivers 19 cubic feet for cargo behind the rear seats or 47 with them folded. In addition to the new hatchback and diesel choices, the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze now has Teen Driver, a feature that parents of teens will appreciate.
Exploring the Chevy Cruze History
Although the history of the Chevrolet Cruze goes back further in other markets, it didn't arrive in the United States until the 2011 model year. It replaced the Cobalt and was a bit larger than this previous model. It was only offered as a sedan but with three trims and features like StabiliTrak electronic stability control, electric power steering, and 10 airbags as standard. It ran on a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter Ecotec engine or a turbocharged version along with the choice of a 6-speed manual or automatic. The Cruze Eco trim had more efficient gearing, active grille shutters, and low-rolling resistance tires. In 2012, Chevy kept changes for the Cruze to a minimum, improving gas mileage, offering push button start and keyless entry, and adding an optional touchscreen navigation system.
For the 2013 model year, Chevrolet gave every Cruze Chevrolet MyLink as standard with the exception of the LS, the base trim. This new system included voice recognition, Bluetooth* streaming audio, Pandora Internet radio, and more. A 7-inch color touchscreen also became available. Chevy also added available safety features like Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, and Rear Park Assist. The diesel powertrain arrived for 2014 before taking a quick break, originally appearing with a 2.0-liter turbo engine and 151 horsepower. The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze was completely new, giving drivers a new turbocharged engine, a more spacious interior, and new exterior styling along with lighter architecture that led to a weight reduction, better acceleration, and improved fuel economy.
