When is it time for new brakes?

One of the most important components on your vehicle when it comes to safety and utility are your brakes. Therefore, it is extremely important to keep an eye on them and to get them replaced when it comes time. When is it time to get them replaced? Well, there are a couple of ways to tell if it is time to get your brakes serviced:

  • You notice that the brake pads look thinner than ¼ of an inch
  • You hear a high pitched sound coming from the brakes
  • You hear a grinding sound coming from the brakes
  • You feel the vehicle pulling to one side or the other when driving straight
  • You feel violent vibrations under normal stopping conditions
  • You feel the brake pedal acting strangely (whether that be too mushy or too sensitive)

There is quite a bit of variance on how long your brake pads will need to be changed. As a general average, you can make your brakes last 50,000 miles; however, this can go up and down depending on how you drive.  If you drive more aggressively, then your brakes can wear out after only 25,000 miles, but if you are gentle on your brakes, then you can make them last up to 70,000 miles. To get an idea of how long the brake pads will last on your vehicle, consult the vehicle's owner's manual.

Are your rotors supposed to be resurfaced or replaced?

The rotors on your vehicle are also a vital part of your brake system. Over time though, rotors tend to suffer from "runout" issues. This happens when your rotors start to wobble when they are spinning.  When this happens, you are left with two options, resurfacing or replacing.  It is more often recommended to get them replaced than resurfaced, but check with your local mechanic at Alexander Chevrolet Buick GMC  to see what would be best for your vehicle, especially if you are in the Dickson, Bellevue, Fairview, Nashville, or Franklin areas.
