Tire Repair and Replacement near Bellevue, TN

When should you get new tires?

When it comes to staying safe on the road, there are many parts on your car that keep you safe.  One of the most important parts, though, is your tires. They are your only contact to the road, and if they have fallen into disrepair, then you might just end up on the side of the road. As such, it is vitally important to check your tires regularly to see how much tread you have left. Here are a few ways to tell if it is time to get a new set of tires:

  • The threads are worn down to less than a 1/16th of an inch
  • The "thread wear bars" in between the treads are level with the regular threads of your tire
  • The tires on your car are over 10 years old
  • The steering wheel has unusually violent vibrations
  • The tire has visible cracks in it

There are two common ways to measure if your tread is below what it should be. The first method is to use a tire depth gauge and is the more exact of the two methods. The second is what is referred to as the "penny" method. Take a normal penny and place it upside down in the grooves between the treads on your vehicle so that Lincoln's hair is facing down and towards you.  If you can see Lincoln's whole head and hair, then it's time to get new tires. If you can only partially see the top of Lincoln's hair on his head, then tire shopping should be in your future. Lastly, if you cannot see the hair on the top of his head, then your tires are safe for a while.
