Here is the biography of the teacher you have chosen from Dickson County to receive a $1,000 cash reward and recognition as the Teacher of the Year!

Pam Hayes

Dickson County

For as long as I can remember, I have been a teacher. Teaching is my profession, my hobby and my passion. After graduating from David Lipscomb College, I went on to receive my master's degree in Reading from Tennessee State University. I have since completed 32 years in the classroom. Though I taught first grade for two years, I have spent the remainder of my career with second graders.

My desire to reach others first appeared when I was five years old, during the summer after my first year in school. Playing school with the neighborhood children was the highlight of my days, and it was a real treat when I got to play the teacher. However, I was only allowed to substitute teach when my nine-year-old sister, Linda, was away from her post. Since my days in the neighborhood classroom, I have gone on to fill my room at Oakmont with close to 700 students, and I find that I have learned just as much from the kids as they have learned from me. I always come home to my family with a story to tell, and I hope that I have had a positive effect on the lives of my students as well.
I have been married for 28 years to my husband Robert, who has always supported me patiently and lovingly as I tell him about my ideas for school and drag him around in search of the newest classroom item. We have a daughter, Paige, who is twenty and a junior at UT Knoxville. She has been subject to many of my lessons and is the one student who gets to stick with me for a lifetime. Our family has a prissy little Yorkie named Roxy, who, unfortunately, I have not been able to teach a thing. Some students are just out of your reach, I suppose! When I'm not at school, you can find me on Pinterest looking for new ideas to share with my students. However, in my spare time I enjoy scrapbooking and reading. I always love shopping and traveling to warm and exciting new places with my sister, Linda (who, yes, became a teachers as well).
